A bracing winter walk at Dorney Lake

10th January 2012 13:42:17

I decided to get out and have a walk around Dorney Lake for a refreshing start to the day.

Situated alongside the Thames at Dorney in Buckinghamshire, the rowing lake and conference facilities were built by Eton College, and completed in 2006.  Dorney Lake was the venue for the Rowing World Championships in 2006 and has hosted a number of other rowing, running and triathlon events since then.

As well as a rowing centre with boathouse, the area around the lake is also used by locals for recreation – dog walking, running, walking, cycling.  For the keen runner it is ideal as the markers along the side show how far you have gone.  (And how far you have yet to go!).  The area is only closed when there is a major event taking place, and these are listed on the Dorney Lake website.

Talking of major events…. now that it is 2012, the events most on our minds are the Olympics and Paralympics, which are being held in London in the summer.  Dorney Lake is the venue for the rowing and canoe slalom events, so it will be a busy time! Unwanted Olympics tickets will be back on sale soon, so there may still be an opportunity to buy tickets to watch Olympic or Paralympic sport locally.
