The very funny Lettice & Lovage comes to the Watermill

24th January 2012 12:50:04

This is a terrific play - a very funny and deeply moving story about two completely different women. Anyone who's ever been a Tour Guide will completely understand Lettice's need to make outrageous inventions to add spice to a very dull tour of the very dull Fustian House. But then along comes Lotte Schoen who works for the Trust which owns they House: she takes a very dim view of Lettice's flights of fancy, and sacks her. But of course that's not the end...unexpectedly they become firm friends through a hatred of english architecture (as you do), and start re-enacting historical trials and executions together. (What else would you do with a new friend?) An unfortunate incident involving Lettice's cat almost destroys the friendship, but they come through it with grand plans for a very different sort of tour.

It's not eactly rooted in reality - in case you hadn't spotted that - but it'll make you forget about wintry and economic storms and have a blooming good laugh. I can't wait!
