We visit Buckmoorend in the Chilterns – please support your local farm shop and enjoy delicious and fresh produce reared or grown on your doorstep

The mid 1980s saw big changes for independent butchers’ shops with the rise of the supermarkets in the UK. We have been very fortunate that since that time a large number of fantastic farm shops have opened up to reconnect us with where our food comes from.

The ‘field to fork’ revolution has filled the void and has brought back great tasting products and better choice from experts who work closely with the land and the animals. Third generation farmer Daniel hares and his wife Steph were so keen to share their family’s ethos and values of sustainable animal husbandry and non-intensive farming with a wider audience, that they established Buckmoorend Farm Shop in Butlers Cross in 2016. It provides the perfect platform for the sale of their glorious home reared fresh tasty meats and for locally made food and drink products from their beloved Chiltern Hills countryside.

“We want to offer reassurance and proven quality for our customers,” says Daniel. “More and more British consumers are concerned about the provenance of their food, animal welfare and the distance it has travelled to reach their plate. Our animals can roam free here and graze on home grown food. It’s good for the animals and it’s good for the taste of the meat. It means it’s packed full of flavour.”

The mixed arable and livestock farm that supplies meat to the farm shop occupies 600 acres in the glorious rolling, chalky, Chiltern Hills on the Chequers Estate – the Prime Minister’s weekend ‘retreat’ – and right on The Ridgeway Footpath. The farm grows wheat and barley as well as keeping animals and includes rare habitats of special scientific interest.

Buckmoorend Farm Shop opened last March and has been successful beyond Steph and Daniel’s wildest dreams. They offer foods from fruit and vegetable ‘staples’ to weekend treats – which Steph is careful to point out can be eaten at any time! Discover locally made fudge, flapjacks, biscuits, beers, wines, yogurts, breads and cheeses – and so much more.

People want good food and want to connect and engage with the means of food production. Farm shops like Buckmoorend help them to do exactly that.
