Paralleling Stoke Park’s illustrious past is the culinary excellence of Executive Chef, Chris Wheeler, who celebrates his 12th year at Stoke Park in 2015. Stoke Park’s fine dining restaurant, Humphry’s (previously The Dining Room) launched in 2010 was instantly awarded two AA Rosettes. After rebranding in 2012 to Humphry’s, the restaurant was awarded its third AA Rosette in January 2013.
The name Humphry’s originates from the famous British landscape designer Humphry Repton. In the 1790’s, Humphry Repton created some of the main features of the magnificent landscape at Stoke Park. In particular he designed the beautiful bridge that you can see from the restaurant.
Humphry’s is a stunning, light-filled restaurant featuring panoramic views of the bridge, estate and the lakes, offering both à la carte and table d’hôte menus available for lunch, as well as a three-course dinner menu and seven course tasting menu. The menu at Humphry’s offers modern British cuisine with a twist.
Before arriving to Stoke Park, Chris had worked in Michelin starred kitchens under Jean-Christophe Novelli as his Group Head Chef. He worked at Le Provence, Lymington, Four Seasons, Park Lane, Maison Novelli and Les Saveurs, Mayfair. He has appeared in the TV programme Hell’s Kitchen 2 alongside Jean-Christophe in 2005.
Chris joined Stoke Park in 2003 and for the past twelve years he has steadily been building Stoke Park’s culinary reputation. In addition to the 3 AA Rosettes, much praise and accolades have been attributed to Chris and his team, with Woman and Home magazine recently stating, ‘Humphry’s is the last word in fine dining’ and The Daily Telegraph naming Stoke Park as having one of ‘Britain’s Best Afternoon Teas’. Humphry’s was voted in the ‘Top 20 Best out of Town Restaurants’ by Harper’s Bazaar, ‘Top 5 Out of Town Restaurants’ by the Square Meal Restaurant Guide, won ‘Best Local Menu’ for his use of local produce at the Buckinghamshire and Berkshire Life Food and Drink Awards, and featured in Tatler’s Restaurant Guide 2013 and again in 2014, with the editor writing in the guide that Chris had cooked two of the best dishes he had ever had!
In 2014 Chris cooked up a storm on both BBC1’s Saturday Kitchen and Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch!
