We round up a few brilliant places for a spot of ice cream in Berkshire

Tutti Frutti

If you are passing through Reading Station, breaking the journey with a visit to Tutti Frutti is a must. The homemade ices and sorbets are fabulous and it’s no surprise to us that they were named the UK’s top ice cream parlour by TripAdvisor – a stunning achievement as it’s not something you expect to find in a train station alongside the fancy goods and ready meals stores. The ingredients include local milk and cream, fresh fruit and handmade toppings. New flavours are always arriving, sometimes suggested by fans.

Lusso

In Newbury, Lusso continues to go down a storm – without the muggy, humid bit – in Weavers Walk, Northbrook Street. The business started three years ago with an ice cream van there and is now a full Italian style eatery combining choices such as pizzas and antipasti with superb gelatos with lots of local ingredients. Not for the kiddies, but handy for frazzled grown ups is that it’s licensed so you can enjoy a glass of wine or even ice creams or milkshakes with the likes of a shot of whisky. By the way, those pizzas are nothing like the ones you find in chains – they’re probably wasted on the little ones, but there is a children’s menu of pizza plus a scoop of ice cream for £6.50.

Nino’s Trattoria

Next stop is Nino’s Trattoria at Reading Road, Pangbourne, a delicious spot for a family feast. Head of the family Nino Bartolomei arrived here from Italy in 1966 to watch the World Cup and basically never went home, even though it meant living on a bench in Paddington Station until he got a hotel job. Eventually Nino had his own successful restaurant business, retired… and then came back to charm us all with the Pangbourne dining treat. There are authentic Italian lunch and dinner menus here with plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options, but it’s the gelato and dolci we’re concentrating on. How about Affogato al Caffé, that’s vanilla ice cream topped with espresso coffee and you can add a liqueur?
