The seasonal wonders of the Royal town and Eton ensure an unbeatable feast of fun for all the family

It’s hard to know where to start here as the two towns, with their unbeatable mix of history and top class shopping provide great entertainment during any day out. But at Christmas it’s very special indeed.

Let’s begin with the popular Reindeer Parade – this is set to start from in front of the Castle at 2pm on 2 December and then head off through the town to Windsor Yards (King Edward Court) where there will be a viewing area to see the reindeer. Here, hot chocolate, minced pies and mulled wine will be offered, subject to availability.

But before that we have the switching on of the lights in Windsor on 18 November, sponsored by Windsor Royal Shopping, now celebrating 20 years in the town as a ‘must visit’ destination with its mix of food, top fashion and gift treats.

Definitely put on your list a visit to Daniel Department Store, where Santa will be in a beautiful grotto every Saturday and Sunday from 11 November, and every day in the week leading up to Christmas, 10.30am to 4.30pm. Entry is £7 including a gift from Santa plus a beautiful image of your child meeting Santa and a family photography experience gift at Venture Photography, Eton worth £245.

Daniel are also hosting Breakfast with Santa (plus a gift) and you can book this for 2, 9, 16 and 22 December, 9 to 10am. This event is suitable for children aged two to 10 and they must be accompanied by an adult, £6 per person. There’s limited availability so make sure you book by calling 01753 801000.

Eton’s celebrations stat on Thursday, 16 November, with the Christmas light switch-on. There’s a Community Carol service at Eton College Chapel at 6pm, followed by a parade through Eton High Street to the Jubilee Square where the lighting ceremony takes place at 7pm.

This year’s pantomime at the Theatre Royal is Sleeping Beauty, which runs from 29 November to 7 January. We attended last year’s production of Jack and the Beanstalk in a family group from toddlers to oldies and it was a fabulous night out, with all mesmerised. Somehow the Theatre Royal manages to ‘pull out all the stops’ year after year, so we can’t wait for Sleeping Beauty.

Basil Brush and that daft duo of Kevin Cruise and Steven Blakeley are already confirmed, alongside DJ Mike Read, with more stars to be announced. Book at theatreroyalwindsor.co.uk.

On 6 December you can also enjoy Carols by Candlelight at the theatre with the Locrian Ensemble in full period costume. They will be joined by Jill Washington, West End star soprano of ‘Phantom of the Opera’ for favourites ranging from ‘Walking in the Air’ to Handel’s ‘Messiah’.
