Sammy the boat cat is a super personality so Maureen McLean headed down beside the Thames to meet this fantastic feline

Little Sammy had a very sad start to his life. He was one of a litter of five abandoned kittens but luckily for him and the other four kittens Wendy Hermon, who runs the Swan Support charity, heard about their plight from an animal charity. Wendy took them on and hand reared them.

At three weeks old Sammy had a bad fit and was rushed to Alma Veterinary Hospital in Windsor, where he was diagnosed with epilepsy. He is now on medication twice a day. We are pleased to say that at the age of 10 months old, he is now doing really well and has turned into a very loving and loved cat.

Given his medical condition he is mostly an indoor cat, but when he goes out Sammy is put on a harness and long lead. Needless to say, he has become a bit of a local celebrity. He rides around as a passenger in the Swan Support rescue van and is completely chilled out. Nothing seems to faze him!

Sammy has his own Facebook page and his own Twitter page @sammy_hermon.

His picture features on the wall of fame at Wolf & Leo in Eton High Street and he is always happy to model their latest pet clothes.

Sammy’s also had a whirl in the hairdresser’s chair at Simon James in Eton, and likes to pay a visit to Lily Chic in town.

So Sammy, what’s your favourite food? - I absolutely love bananas. Given the choice between meat or bananas, it’s a banana any day of the week for me!

What do you think of all the rescued swans? - I find them quite fascinating and enjoy being with my Mummy Wendy when they are released back onto the River Thames after their rehabilitation at the Swan Support Treatment Centre in Datchet.

We hear you like a spot of shopping Sammy, is that right? - Absolutely – wouldn’t you if you got fed cat treats? Mummy pushes me around in a trolley at the PetsatHome store in Slough and I get lots of attention.

Wendy Hermon and her husband Steve adore animals and have been rescuing injured and sick swans for over 20 years. To find out more about the work of Swan Support or to report a sick or injured swan visit swansupport.org.uk, call 07968 868172 or 07572 450967, email info@swansupport.org.uk.
