It sounds like heaven to Maureen McLean: Rick’s delicious dishes and favourite movies on a big screen

Imagine a still summer’s evening in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside.

A large outdoor cinema screen and one of your all-time favourite movies. Wouldn’t it be just great if somebody could bring you two courses from a sumptuous al fresco menu? Even better if it was one created by celebrity chef Rick Stein… well imagine no more!

We’re delighted to share with foodie fans that Rick Stein’s Sunset Cinema in conjunction with The Pop-Up Picture Company is coming to the Spa garden at Cliveden House from 21 June to 11 July. Following on from the success of Marlow based celebrity chef Tom Kerridge’s pop up cinema in Marlow, we’re certain this new event will be an absolute sell out.

We had the pleasure of meeting Rick in the French Dining Room at Cliveden House. He says: “Back in Oz, my wife Sarah has read about Cliveden and the Astor family. She’s fascinated by Christine Keeler.”

The film Scandal recreates the events involving Wraysbury girl Christine Keeler and how her liaisons with an alleged Soviet spy and the then war minister John Profumo, ultimately caused the latter to resign. Christine was introduced to John Profumo at a party at Cliveden.

It’s a chain of events that has always fascinated me, too, and if you go for a spa day at Cliveden House, you get to swim in that very famous swimming pool. So Scandal just had to be one of the choices to be shown at the pop up cinema.

There will be a host of other films, including the recent box office smash La La Land, timeless The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, and classics such as Pride & Prejudice.

Cinema goers will get to experience some foodie delights such as Rick’s signature seafood dishes or slow cooked lamb curry, and for the veggies out there, madras Curry Halloumi with tomato and tamarind.

Rick has a number of famous seafood restaurants including those in Padstow, and Falmouth. He’s also recently opened a new restaurant not so far from our neck of the woods in Barnes.

I love watching the BBC’s Rick Stein Long Weekends series. To me Rick really demystifies the cooking of what seem complex dishes. You can tell just how passionate he is about food and sourcing the finest ingredients. Rick told us his favourite dish to cook is a French fish stew called Bourride: “It’s garlic central” he says … I’m sold – pass me a mint! On the subject of seafood he insists: “Try Dover sole and then tell me you don’t like fish!”

His own film choices are very much about the company: “I catch up on the latest movies when I’m on flights, but I love watching films together with other people. There’s just something infectious about watching a film together, whether it’s laughter or tears. The best thing about a cinema excursion to me is the size of the screen and the sound.”
